The story in the sky

Magha belongs to the Pitris, the forefathers of every family line, who, tradition says, watch over their descendants with affection. Each year in Pitru Paksha families remember them with water, sesame and food cooked at home, and the day the Moon passes through Magha in that fortnight is held especially dear for it. An old wedding hymn in the Rig Veda also names Magha: the cattle of the Sun's daughter's dowry set out under it. So this is the star of lineage, of the family name and of what one generation hands to the next. Tradition sees that in Magha people: dignified, generous, and proud of where they come from.

What the name holds

Magha means 'the great' or 'the bountiful', and its symbol is a royal throne, the seat of honour that is also a seat of responsibility for others. Tradition gives each quarter (pada) of the nakshatra its own syllable for beginning a child's name, and the quarter the Moon stood in at birth chooses it: मा (ma), मी (mi), मू (mu) or मे (me).

Nature

People born with the Moon in Magha are said to carry themselves with a natural, regal bearing and to set great store by ceremony, honour and doing things properly. Ketu, its ruling planet, gives an inner detachment and a sense of tradition, so beneath their confident manner they often carry a quiet devotion.

Strengths

They have natural authority and are comfortable taking charge, and others often look to them to lead. They respect elders, keep up family customs and are loyal to their word. Many are generous hosts and patrons, glad to share what they have. Their courage and sense of honour make them steady in a crisis and protective of those who depend on them.

In family and marriage

Family, heritage and the household's good name matter deeply to them. They are devoted to parents and elders and like to see the family's rituals kept. Their pride can sometimes make it hard to admit a mistake or to accept advice, so a little humility at home keeps their warmth flowing freely to those closest to them.

The partner who suits them

A partner who is respectful, gracious and comfortable with family tradition tends to suit them, someone who appreciates their generosity and gives them due regard. They value a spouse with dignity and good manners. With mutual respect and a shared sense of family duty, they make a generous, protective partner who builds a home their children will be proud of.

In kundali matching

Magha is Rakshasa gana and Antya nadi, and its yoni animal is the rat. In a match these are set against the partner's nakshatra: a partner who is also Antya nadi brings Nadi dosha; a partner of Deva or Manushya gana brings Gana dosha, while another Rakshasa does not; and Yoni compares the two animals. Other features of the two kundalis can cancel a dosha, so no nakshatra makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.

Magha is one of the six Gand Mool nakshatras, which sit at the three knots (gand) where a rashi and a nakshatra end together. By the common reckoning only the pada at the knot counts - for Magha, its first pada - though some families count the whole nakshatra, so the family pandit decides from the exact birth time. Tradition holds that a birth at the knot can bring difficulties for the child's family, the parents most of all. It belongs to the birth rather than to matching, and does not enter the 36 gunas.
