Each of the 27 birth nakshatras has an animal, its yoni, which stands for a person's instinctive nature. Two of the same animal, or animals that are friends, are traditionally read as a natural physical match: desire and comfort with each other come easily. Natural enemies such as cat and rat, serpent and mongoose, or cow and tiger are read as a mismatch in the couple's physical relationship - different needs and rhythms - a gap that affection and patience bridge. A low Yoni score lowers the total but is not a dosha.

Where the idea comes from

Yoni means womb, source or origin, and in the old texts it was the word for a creature’s kind and nature. The sages gave each nakshatra an animal and let the animal speak for the person’s instinctive side: their temper, their desire, and how they draw close to a partner. Every listener knew what a horse or an elephant or a deer is like, so no more needed saying.

Animals that live peaceably side by side stood for ease between two people, and animals known in every village as enemies stood for friction. This is how the tradition spoke about sexual compatibility, which matters in every marriage, in a language a whole family could use without embarrassment.

Every animal but the mongoose has a male and a female nakshatra. The same animal takes the full 4 either way, though a male and a female of one animal is the classical ideal.
