Hasta's deity is Savitar, the Sun as the one who wakes the world and sets it to work. He is the god of the Gayatri mantra, the prayer said at sunrise in countless homes, and the Vedas call him 'golden-handed', stretching out his hands each morning to rouse every creature to its task. It is fitting, then, that this star is called the hand and that its five stars are often pictured as five fingers. Tradition sees Savitar's gift in Hasta people: skilful hands, a quick, practical mind, and a cheerful readiness to get things done.
What the name holds
Hasta simply means 'the hand', and its symbol is an open hand, the tool of every craft and the gesture of giving and blessing. Tradition gives each quarter (pada) of the nakshatra its own syllable for beginning a child's name, and the quarter the Moon stood in at birth chooses it: पू (pu), ष (sha), ण (ṇa) or ठ (ṭha).
Nature
People born with the Moon in Hasta are said to be skilful, practical and quick-witted. The Moon, its ruling planet, gives them sensitivity, imagination and an easy, pleasant manner.
Strengths
They are good with their hands and their minds, whether in crafts, cooking, healing, writing or business. Many are resourceful problem-solvers who can make something useful out of little. They have a light sense of humour, are good company and get along with all kinds of people. Hard-working and adaptable, they turn ideas into practical results.
In family and marriage
At home they are helpful, attentive and full of small, thoughtful gestures. They like a neat, well-run household and are often the one who fixes, arranges and organises. Their active minds can make them restless or prone to worry, so time to relax with the family and a calm routine help them stay at their best.
The partner who suits them
A partner who is warm, cheerful and appreciative of their practical care tends to suit them, someone who enjoys working together on the home and on shared plans. They respond to kindness and conversation, and to a spouse who values effort over show. With such a partner they are loyal, capable and devoted, and their skilful hands keep the household thriving.
In kundali matching
Hasta is Deva gana and Adi nadi, and its yoni animal is the buffalo. In a match these are set against the partner's nakshatra: a partner who is also Adi nadi brings Nadi dosha; a partner of Rakshasa gana brings Gana dosha; and Yoni compares the two animals. Other features of the two kundalis can cancel a dosha, so no nakshatra makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
