Open the Gun Milan appA nakshatra has four quarters, called padas. Part of Uttara Phalguni lies in Simha and part in Kanya, so a person born in Uttara Phalguni has Simha or Kanya as their Moon sign depending on the pada; the kundali shows which.
The story in the sky
Uttara Phalguni's deity is Aryaman, the Aditya of friendship, hospitality and the marriage bond. At a Hindu wedding the bride offers puffed rice into the fire in his name, asking that the new tie hold fast, and in the old texts he is the god who keeps the ways of family life. The Mahabharata adds a well-loved detail: Arjuna was born under Uttara Phalguni, which is why one of his names is Phalguna, and few heroes were as loyal to their brothers or as true to their word. Tradition sees that in Uttara Phalguni people: dependable, warm, and serious about every promise they make.
What the name holds
Uttara Phalguni means 'the later Phalguni', the second of the pair of wedding stars. Its symbol is the back legs of a bed - the marriage bed again, here standing for the settled union on which family life rests. Tradition gives each quarter (pada) of the nakshatra its own syllable for beginning a child's name, and the quarter the Moon stood in at birth chooses it: टे (ṭe), टो (ṭo), पा (pa) or पी (pi).
Nature
People born with the Moon in Uttara Phalguni are said to be dependable, kind and generous in spirit. The Sun, its ruling planet, gives them dignity, a sense of duty and a wish to be useful. Its first pada lies in Simha and the rest in Kanya, so some have more of Simha's warmth and others more of Kanya's care for detail.
Strengths
They are reliable friends and colleagues who keep their word and stand by people through difficulty. Many are good organisers and administrators, fair-minded and helpful. They are generous without show and take satisfaction in supporting others. Their sense of responsibility and honesty earns them lasting respect in the family and at work.
In family and marriage
Marriage and family commitments are close to their heart, and they take their role as a spouse seriously. They are steady providers, devoted to the welfare of their household and of their relatives. Their sense of duty can make them take on too much, so they do well to share responsibilities and to accept help when it is offered.
The partner who suits them
A partner who is loyal, sincere and ready to share responsibility tends to suit them, someone who sees marriage as a partnership of equals. They value respect, gratitude and kept promises. With a spouse who supports them as faithfully as they support others, they build a stable, harmonious marriage based on trust and mutual care.
In kundali matching
Uttara Phalguni is Manushya gana and Adi nadi, and its yoni animal is the cow. In a match these are set against the partner's nakshatra: a partner who is also Adi nadi brings Nadi dosha; a partner of Rakshasa gana brings Gana dosha; and Yoni compares the two animals. Other features of the two kundalis can cancel a dosha, so no nakshatra makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
