Uttara Bhadrapada's deity is Ahir Budhnya, 'the serpent of the deep', who in the Vedic hymns lies at the bottom of the waters of the sky and keeps the depths calm. Little more is told of him, but families will know the picture it is close to: Vishnu resting on the coils of the serpent Shesha upon the ocean of milk, perfectly at peace while the world turns. Still water runs deep, and it holds more than it shows. Tradition sees that in Uttara Bhadrapada people: calm, wise and self-controlled, slow to anger, and the steady presence others lean on when the waters are rough.
What the name holds
Uttara Bhadrapada means 'the later blessed feet', the second of the pair, and its symbol is a serpent resting in still water, the picture of quiet strength held in reserve. Tradition gives each quarter (pada) of the nakshatra its own syllable for beginning a child's name, and the quarter the Moon stood in at birth chooses it: दू (du), थ (tha), झ (jha) or ञ (nya).
Nature
People born with the Moon in Uttara Bhadrapada are said to be calm, wise and self-controlled. Saturn, its ruling planet, gives patience, discipline and endurance, so their calm comes from real inner steadiness.
Strengths
They think before they speak and act with maturity, and people trust their judgement. Many are drawn to study, philosophy, charity or any work that needs patience and compassion. They are generous, kind to those in need and able to bear difficulty without complaint. Their composure in a crisis makes them a source of strength for their family and friends.
In family and marriage
In family life they are devoted, gentle and deeply responsible, and they put their family's welfare before their own comfort. They like a peaceful, well-ordered home and avoid quarrels. Their tendency to keep their feelings to themselves can sometimes hide their needs, so they do well to say what they want and to accept the care they so readily give.
The partner who suits them
A partner who is kind, sincere and emotionally steady tends to suit them, someone who values peace, loyalty and a shared spiritual or moral outlook. They respond to patience and quiet understanding rather than drama. With such a spouse they make a wise, faithful and caring partner, the calm centre around which a happy family grows.
In kundali matching
Uttara Bhadrapada is Manushya gana and Madhya nadi, and its yoni animal is the cow. In a match these are set against the partner's nakshatra: a partner who is also Madhya nadi brings Nadi dosha; a partner of Rakshasa gana brings Gana dosha; and Yoni compares the two animals. Other features of the two kundalis can cancel a dosha, so no nakshatra makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
