Revati's deity is Pushan, the guardian of roads and travellers, who finds lost cattle and brings every traveller safely home. The star has a lovely story of its own too. King Kakudmi took his daughter, Revati, to Brahma to ask who should marry her, and waited politely while a song was finished. When Brahma turned to them, he smiled and said that ages had passed on earth meanwhile, and sent them home to Balarama, Krishna's elder brother, who became Revati's husband. Tradition sees Pushan's kindness and Revati's patience in Revati people: gentle, caring, and the ones who make sure everyone gets home.
What the name holds
Revati means 'the wealthy' or 'the abundant', and its symbol is a fish, or a pair of fish, swimming freely in the waters. Tradition gives each quarter (pada) of the nakshatra its own syllable for beginning a child's name, and the quarter the Moon stood in at birth chooses it: दे (de), दो (do), चा (cha) or ची (chi).
Nature
People born with the Moon in Revati are said to be gentle, kind and compassionate. Mercury, its ruling planet, gives intelligence, a way with words and a sociable, refined nature.
Strengths
They are caring, generous and quick to help anyone in need, often going out of their way for strangers as well as friends. Many have artistic, musical or literary talent and a sensitive imagination. They are honest, courteous and easy to get along with. Their faith and their gentle optimism help others feel safe and hopeful in uncertain times.
In family and marriage
In family life they are affectionate, nurturing and devoted to their children and elders. They like a harmonious, gentle home and will go to great lengths to keep the peace. Their soft heart can sometimes make them too trusting or slow to say no, so a little firmness, especially about their own needs, helps them protect the care they give so freely.
The partner who suits them
A partner who is kind, protective and honest tends to suit them, someone who appreciates their gentleness and offers security and steady guidance in return. They value warmth, faith and a peaceful home above status or display. With such a partner they make a loving, loyal and nurturing companion who brings tenderness and grace into married life.
In kundali matching
Revati is Deva gana and Antya nadi, and its yoni animal is the elephant. In a match these are set against the partner's nakshatra: a partner who is also Antya nadi brings Nadi dosha; a partner of Rakshasa gana brings Gana dosha; and Yoni compares the two animals. Other features of the two kundalis can cancel a dosha, so no nakshatra makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
Revati is one of the six Gand Mool nakshatras, which sit at the three knots (gand) where a rashi and a nakshatra end together. By the common reckoning only the pada at the knot counts - for Revati, its fourth pada - though some families count the whole nakshatra, so the family pandit decides from the exact birth time. Tradition holds that a birth at the knot can bring difficulties for the child's family, the parents most of all. It belongs to the birth rather than to matching, and does not enter the 36 gunas.
