A nakshatra has four quarters, called padas. Part of Uttara Ashadha lies in Dhanu and part in Makara, so a person born in Uttara Ashadha has Dhanu or Makara as their Moon sign depending on the pada; the kundali shows which.

The story in the sky

Uttara Ashadha belongs to the Vishvadevas, 'all the gods' together, the guardians of virtue and of the household. Traditional families remember them every day without always knowing it: in the old way of keeping a home, a small portion of the day's cooked food is first set aside as an offering to the Vishvadevas before the family eats, so that every meal begins with gratitude to all. A victory won this way, with everyone's blessing and nobody wronged, is the kind that lasts. Tradition sees that in Uttara Ashadha people: principled, responsible, patient, and determined to win only by doing right.

What the name holds

Uttara Ashadha means 'the later invincible one', the victory that comes second and stays. Its symbol is an elephant's tusk, the picture of strength, dignity and steady power. Tradition gives each quarter (pada) of the nakshatra its own syllable for beginning a child's name, and the quarter the Moon stood in at birth chooses it: भे (bhe), भो (bho), जा (ja) or जी (ji).

Nature

People born with the Moon in Uttara Ashadha are said to be modest, grateful and well-mannered, and never to forget a kindness done to them. The Sun, its ruling planet, gives them honour, leadership and a strong sense of duty. Its first pada is in Dhanu and the rest in Makara, so some have more of Dhanu's idealism and others more of Makara's practicality.

Strengths

They are honest, fair and trustworthy, and they keep their commitments even when it costs them. Many rise steadily to positions of responsibility through patience and integrity rather than shortcuts. They are good organisers and leaders who take care of the people under them. Their success tends to be lasting because it is built on sound foundations.

In family and marriage

In the family they are dependable, protective and conscious of their duty to elders and children alike. They like order, respect and a household that holds to good values. Their seriousness can make them seem reserved, and they may need to take time for lightness and rest; a family that draws them into its laughter brings out their warmth.

The partner who suits them

A partner who is sincere, loyal and principled tends to suit them, someone who shares their sense of right and wrong and values a stable home. They respect a spouse who is steady and dignified, and they appreciate quiet support more than display. With such a partner they build a marriage of mutual respect that grows stronger with every year.

In kundali matching

Uttara Ashadha is Manushya gana and Antya nadi, and its yoni animal is the mongoose. In a match these are set against the partner's nakshatra: a partner who is also Antya nadi brings Nadi dosha; a partner of Rakshasa gana brings Gana dosha; and Yoni compares the two animals. Other features of the two kundalis can cancel a dosha, so no nakshatra makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
