The story in the sky

Makara is the sign of Makar Sankranti, the day the Sun enters it and begins its journey north, celebrated with kites, til and jaggery across India. Its lord is Saturn, Shani, whom the Puranas call the son of the Sun. Father and son are said to keep their distance for most of the year, but tradition holds that at Makar Sankranti the Sun comes to stay a month in his son's house, and the two are reconciled. A season of new light and an old bond made good: families hear in a Makara Moon a child who is patient, dutiful and true to the family.

What the name holds

Makara is the name of a creature found only in Indian art: part crocodile, part fish, sometimes with an elephant's trunk, carved over temple doorways and worn by Vishnu as his makara earrings. It is also the mount of the river goddess Ganga. At home in water and on land alike, it suits a sign that is practical and patient. Makara holds the last three padas of Uttara Ashadha, all of Shravana and the first two of Dhanishtha, so a child named by the Moon here takes a first sound from भो जा जी खी खू खे खो गा गी (bho, ja, ji, khi, khu, khe, kho, ga, gi).

Nature

Makara is an earth sign of the movable (chara) kind, ruled by Saturn. Its symbol is the makara, or, in the zodiac, a creature deer-headed with a fish's tail, at home both on land and in water. Those born with the Moon here are serious, practical and ambitious in a quiet way. They think before they speak, plan for the long term and are not easily carried away by passing moods.

Strengths

Their strengths are discipline, perseverance and a deep sense of duty. People with a Makara Moon work steadily towards their goals, accept responsibility early in life and can be relied on when it matters. They are careful with resources, respectful of tradition and often grow more confident and successful with age. Many make capable administrators, managers and builders of lasting things. The tendency to watch, traditionally, is too much reserve or seriousness; laughter and rest are good for them.

In family and marriage

In family life they are the dependable provider, the one who makes sure the future is secure. They honour their elders, carry family responsibilities without complaint and teach their children the value of effort. In marriage they are faithful, practical and committed for the long haul. They may not always express affection in words, but they show it through constancy, sacrifice and care for the family's well-being.

The partner who suits them

A partner who is warm, patient and sincere suits Makara best, someone who sees the tenderness beneath their reserve and gently draws it out. Respect for their hard work, a shared sense of responsibility and a gentle reminder to enjoy what they have built make them the most dependable of companions.

In kundali matching

Makara is ruled by Saturn and is of Vaishya varna; its vashya group is Chatushpada in the first half of the sign and Jalachara in the second. In a match, Saturn and the lord of the partner's rashi are read for Graha Maitri, the friendship of the two minds; the two varnas and vashya groups are compared in Varna and Vashya; and how far the partner's rashi lies from Makara decides Bhakoot. No rashi makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
