The story in the sky

Kumbha is the pot, and the most famous pot in Indian story is the one that held amrit. The Puranas tell how the gods and the asuras churned the ocean of milk together, and at the end Dhanvantari rose from the waters carrying a kumbha of nectar. As it was carried away, drops fell at Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik, and the Kumbh Mela is still held at those four places. The sign's lord is Saturn, the slow and patient planet. A vessel that carries something precious for everyone: families hear in a Kumbha Moon a child who thinks of the good of many.

What the name holds

Kumbha means 'pot' or 'pitcher', the same vessel as the kalash set down at the start of every puja, filled with water and crowned with mango leaves. Its symbol is a person carrying a pot on the shoulder, or a pot being poured out, sharing all it holds. Kumbha holds the last two padas of Dhanishtha, all of Shatabhisha and the first three of Purva Bhadrapada, so a child named by the Moon here takes a first sound from गू गे गो सा सी सू से सो दा (gu, ge, go, sa, si, su, se, so, da).

Nature

Kumbha is an air sign of the fixed (sthira) kind, ruled by Saturn and pictured as a person carrying a water pot, pouring out what it holds for others. Those born with the Moon here combine Saturn's seriousness with the air element's love of ideas. They are thoughtful, original and principled, often a little ahead of their time. They value friendship and fairness, and they care about society, not only about their own circle.

Strengths

Their strengths are integrity, independence of mind and a genuine wish to help. People with a Kumbha Moon are loyal friends, fair in their dealings and willing to serve causes larger than themselves. They think clearly, see problems from new angles and are not swayed by fashion or gossip. Many are drawn to science, social work, technology and public service. The tendency to watch, traditionally, is appearing detached; they feel deeply but may need encouragement to show it.

In family and marriage

At home they are steady, fair and respectful of each person's individuality. They give their children room to grow and encourage education and independent thinking. In marriage they want a partner who is also a true friend, someone they can share ideals and conversation with. They are constant once committed and they show love by being dependable, honest and supportive of their spouse's own aims.

The partner who suits them

A partner who is open-minded, sincere and secure in themselves suits Kumbha best, someone who values friendship within marriage and does not mistake their need for some space for coldness. When a partner shares their sense of purpose and draws out their warmth with patience and gentle humour, Kumbha's quiet affection shows itself fully.

In kundali matching

Kumbha is ruled by Saturn and is of Shudra varna; its vashya group is Dwipada. In a match, Saturn and the lord of the partner's rashi are read for Graha Maitri, the friendship of the two minds; the two varnas and vashya groups are compared in Varna and Vashya; and how far the partner's rashi lies from Kumbha decides Bhakoot. No rashi makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
