Shatabhisha belongs to Varuna, the king of the waters and keeper of truth, who in the Vedas sees every promise made and every promise broken. A verse of the Rig Veda says to him, 'a hundred, a thousand remedies are yours, O king', and that is where the star's name comes from: the hundred healers. Varuna holds the world together with the order of truth, as the sea holds its rivers. Tradition sees that in Shatabhisha people: truthful and independent, drawn to healing and to understanding how things really work, and quietly content in their own company.
What the name holds
Shatabhisha means 'a hundred healers' or 'a hundred medicines', and its symbol is an empty circle, the picture of completeness and of a world held within itself. Tradition gives each quarter (pada) of the nakshatra its own syllable for beginning a child's name, and the quarter the Moon stood in at birth chooses it: गो (go), सा (sa), सी (si) or सू (su).
Nature
People born with the Moon in Shatabhisha are said to be outspoken, courageous and philosophical, with little patience for idle talk. Rahu, its ruling planet, gives an original, inventive mind and an interest in what is unusual or not yet understood.
Strengths
They are natural healers and problem-solvers, and many are drawn to medicine, science, technology, astrology or research. They value truth highly and are not swayed by opinion or fashion. They are self-reliant, disciplined and able to work long hours alone on something that matters to them. Their honesty and insight make their advice valuable in serious matters.
In family and marriage
In family life they are loyal and responsible, though they often need some time and space of their own. They show love through practical help and by solving problems for those they care about. Their reserve can sometimes be mistaken for distance, so they do well to share their thoughts and feelings openly with their spouse and family.
The partner who suits them
A partner who is understanding, intelligent and respectful of their independence tends to suit them, someone who enjoys thoughtful conversation and does not need constant company. They value honesty, trust and shared ideals. With a spouse who gives them room and warmth in equal measure, they become a faithful, caring and quietly devoted partner.
In kundali matching
Shatabhisha is Rakshasa gana and Adi nadi, and its yoni animal is the horse. In a match these are set against the partner's nakshatra: a partner who is also Adi nadi brings Nadi dosha; a partner of Deva or Manushya gana brings Gana dosha, while another Rakshasa does not; and Yoni compares the two animals. Other features of the two kundalis can cancel a dosha, so no nakshatra makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
