A nakshatra has four quarters, called padas. Part of Dhanishtha lies in Makara and part in Kumbha, so a person born in Dhanishtha has Makara or Kumbha as their Moon sign depending on the pada; the kundali shows which.

The story in the sky

Dhanishtha belongs to the eight Vasus, the bright gods of earth, water, fire, wind, sky, sun, moon and stars, the elements that make the world rich. The Mahabharata tells how the eight Vasus were once born on earth as sons of the river Ganga, and how one of them stayed to live a full human life as Bhishma, remembered above all for a promise he kept for the rest of his life. So this star joins abundance with steadfastness. Tradition sees that in Dhanishtha people: energetic, generous and musical, at their best when they bring others together, and as good as their word.

What the name holds

Dhanishtha means 'the wealthiest', and it is also called Shravishtha, 'the most famous'. Its symbol is a drum, the picture of rhythm and celebration, which sounds full because it is open within. Tradition gives each quarter (pada) of the nakshatra its own syllable for beginning a child's name, and the quarter the Moon stood in at birth chooses it: गा (ga), गी (gi), गू (gu) or गे (ge).

Nature

People born with the Moon in Dhanishtha are said to be bold, broad-minded and fond of good living, at ease and confident in any company. Mars, its ruling planet, gives courage, drive and an ambition to achieve. Dhanishtha spans Makara and Kumbha, so some carry more of Makara's discipline and others more of Kumbha's humanitarian spirit.

Strengths

They are hard-working, adaptable and good at turning effort into prosperity. Many have a love of music, dance or performance, and a strong sense of timing in life as well as in art. They are generous with what they earn and enjoy sharing it with family and community. Their enthusiasm makes them good team players and natural organisers of events and gatherings.

In family and marriage

At home they are lively, giving and keen to provide well for everyone. They enjoy celebrations and like a house that is full and active. Their busy, ambitious nature can sometimes leave too little time for quiet togetherness, so making room for unhurried time with their spouse and children keeps the home's rhythm in harmony.

The partner who suits them

A partner who is supportive, sociable and comfortable with an active life tends to suit them, someone who appreciates their generosity and shares their enjoyment of celebration. They value loyalty and a spouse who keeps them grounded while cheering them on. Their own gift to the marriage is warmth, generosity and a dependable hand that brings abundance into the home.

In kundali matching

Dhanishtha is Rakshasa gana and Madhya nadi, and its yoni animal is the lion. In a match these are set against the partner's nakshatra: a partner who is also Madhya nadi brings Nadi dosha; a partner of Deva or Manushya gana brings Gana dosha, while another Rakshasa does not; and Yoni compares the two animals. Other features of the two kundalis can cancel a dosha, so no nakshatra makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
