Graha Maitri looks at mental compatibility and friendship: whether the two think alike and enjoy each other's company. It carries 5 of the 36 gunas.

Every rashi is ruled by a graha, its lord. When the lords of the two Moon rashis are friends, the couple are traditionally said to understand each other easily; when they are enemies, to see the world differently and to need more patience with each other. Where the idea comes from

Graha Maitri means the friendship of the planets. In the classical texts the grahas form a royal court: the Sun is the king and the Moon the queen, Mars the commander, Mercury the prince, Jupiter and Venus the two ministers - Jupiter the guru of the gods, Venus the guru of the asuras - and Saturn the servant. Like any court it has its friendships and its rivalries, set down once and holding in every kundali.

The Moon stands for the mind, and the lord of the sign the Moon sits in was taken to colour how that mind works. So matching the two Moon-sign lords is a way of asking whether two minds would sit at ease at the same table.

A full Graha Maitri cancels Gana dosha

When the two rashi lords are the same graha, or friends both ways, the classical rule is that Gana dosha loses its force, and the Gun Milan app marks a Gana dosha as cancelled. A score of 4, where one lord is friendly and the other only neutral, does not cancel it.

What the Gun Milan app shows

The result shows both lords and the points, added into the total, and notes a cancelled Gana dosha. Graha Maitri raises no dosha of its own. Whether your family relies on the cancellation is a question for your pandit ji.
