The story in the sky
Karka is the Moon's own sign, and one of the Moon's best-loved stories is of its birth. When the gods and the asuras churned the ocean of milk for the nectar of immortality, the cool, shining Moon rose from the waves among its treasures. The same churning brought up halahal, a poison that would have burned the world, and Shiva drank it to save everyone; he then took the crescent Moon onto his head, its coolness soothed the burning, and there it rests to this day, which is why he is called Chandrashekhar. A sign ruled by a light born of the waters, whose touch calms: families hear in it a tender, feeling child whose moods change like the phases and always come back to rest.
What the name holds
Karka, also written Karkata, means 'crab', and the crab is its symbol: a hard shell guarding something soft, a creature at home both in the water and on the shore. It never walks straight at a difficulty; it finds its way round it sideways. Karka holds the last pada of Punarvasu and all of Pushya and Ashlesha, so a child named by the Moon here takes a first sound from ही हु हे हो डा डी डू डे डो (hi, hu, he, ho, ḍa, ḍi, ḍu, ḍe, ḍo).
Nature
Karka is a water sign of the movable (chara) kind, and it is the Moon's own sign, so the Moon is especially at home here. Its symbol is the crab, with a firm shell protecting a soft interior, and that is a fair picture of the Karka temperament. These are people of feeling: intuitive, imaginative and quick to sense the mood of a room. Their emotions run deep and their memories run long.
Strengths
Their great strength is care. People with a Karka Moon nurture people instinctively, whether children, elders or friends in need, and they make any house feel like a home. They are loyal, grateful for kindness, and protective of the people and traditions they love. Many have a gift for cooking, hospitality and anything that involves looking after others. The tendency to watch, traditionally, is a changeable mood; reassurance and a quiet word usually settle it.
In family and marriage
Family is the centre of their world. They are devoted to their parents, especially their mother, and they keep festivals, recipes and family ties alive. In marriage they are tender, attentive and giving, and they want a secure, affectionate home above almost anything else. They feel love through small gestures and remembered occasions, and a partner who offers steady warmth receives a lifetime of care in return.
The partner who suits them
A gentle, reliable partner who values family suits Karka best, someone who does not dismiss feelings and who is patient on the days the shell closes. They flourish with a partner who is openly affectionate, keeps promises, and is happy to build a close, warm household together.
In kundali matching
Karka is ruled by Moon and is of Brahmin varna; its vashya group is Jalachara. In a match, Moon and the lord of the partner's rashi are read for Graha Maitri, the friendship of the two minds; the two varnas and vashya groups are compared in Varna and Vashya; and how far the partner's rashi lies from Karka decides Bhakoot. No rashi makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
