The story in the sky
The classical texts picture Mithuna as a man and a woman side by side, he holding a mace and she a veena: strength and music, held together as a pair. Its lord is Mercury, Budha, whom the Puranas call the son of the Moon, so clever and so gracious that he was made the prince of the planetary court, the one who carries messages and keeps the accounts. Where Mesha leads and Vrishabha waits, Mithuna talks, trades and connects. Families hear in a Mithuna Moon a child who will never be short of friends or of something to say.
What the name holds
Mithuna means 'a pair' or 'a couple', the same word used for a union of two. Mithuna holds the last two padas of Mrigashira, all of Ardra and the first three of Punarvasu. A child named by the Moon here takes a first sound from का की कु घ ङ छ के को हा (ka, ki, ku, gha, nga, chha, ke, ko, ha); ङ is in the chart, though hardly any names begin with it.
Nature
Mithuna is an air sign of the dual (dvisvabhava) kind, ruled by Mercury, the planet of intellect and speech. Like the pair it is named for, those born with the Moon here seem to carry two sides at once, and their minds are restless and lively. They love ideas, news, books and conversation, and they adapt easily to new people and new places.
Strengths
Their strengths are intelligence, wit and versatility. They learn quickly, explain things clearly and can turn their hand to many kinds of work, which is why so many do well in teaching, writing, trade and anything that needs communication. They are good company, cheerful and youthful in spirit at any age. The tendency to watch, traditionally, is a scattered mind; they are at their best when they choose a few things and see them through.
In family and marriage
At home they bring laughter and conversation, and they keep relationships with siblings and friends lively for life. They are affectionate in a light, playful way and dislike heavy, silent moods. In marriage they want a partner who is also a friend, someone to talk with late into the evening and share plans with. Given variety and mental companionship, they are loyal and attentive spouses.
The partner who suits them
A partner with an interested, open mind suits them best, someone who enjoys conversation and does not mistake their curiosity for a lack of seriousness. A steady partner who offers a calm anchor while still leaving them room to explore brings out the most devoted side of Mithuna.
In kundali matching
Mithuna is ruled by Mercury and is of Shudra varna; its vashya group is Dwipada. In a match, Mercury and the lord of the partner's rashi are read for Graha Maitri, the friendship of the two minds; the two varnas and vashya groups are compared in Varna and Vashya; and how far the partner's rashi lies from Mithuna decides Bhakoot. No rashi makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
