The story in the sky

The bull of Vrishabha is easiest to picture as Nandi, the bull who carries Shiva and who sits before every Shiva temple, facing the shrine, patiently waiting for his lord. Its ruler is Venus, Shukra, whom the Puranas call the wise teacher of the asuras and the old texts simply call Kavi, the poet. Tradition also says the Moon is exalted here, at its happiest and strongest of all twelve signs. Strength that can wait, devotion that does not wander and a contented mind: that is what families hear in a Vrishabha Moon.

What the name holds

Vrishabha means 'bull' in Sanskrit, and the word also carries a sense of strength and of being the best of a kind; in old verses a great hero is praised as a bull among men. Its symbol is the bull, the animal that pulls the plough and feeds a village. Vrishabha holds the last three padas of Krittika, all of Rohini and the first two of Mrigashira, so a child named by the Moon here takes a first sound from ई उ ए ओ वा वी वू वे वो (i, u, e, o, va, vi, vu, ve, vo).

Nature

Vrishabha is an earth sign of the fixed (sthira) kind, ruled by Venus and pictured as a bull. The Moon is said to be at its happiest here, and those born with it in Vrishabha are known for an even, contented mind. They are patient and unhurried, slow to anger and slow to change their opinions. They love comfort, good food, music and beautiful surroundings, and they enjoy the simple pleasures of a settled life.

Strengths

Their great strength is steadiness. Once they give their word or their affection, they keep it, and they finish what they begin. They are practical with money and careful about the future, so the people who depend on them rarely feel insecure. Many have a fine aesthetic sense and a pleasant voice. The tendency to watch, traditionally, is stubbornness; when they dig in their heels, gentle patience moves them far better than pressure.

In family and marriage

Family means a great deal to people with a Vrishabha Moon. They build a home slowly and lovingly, and they want it to be comfortable, orderly and welcoming to relatives. In marriage they are faithful, affectionate and protective, expressing love through care, good meals and steady presence rather than grand gestures. They value security, and a marriage that feels stable lets their warmth and humour come out fully.

The partner who suits them

A partner who is sincere, consistent and appreciative of home life suits them best. They do well with someone who does not rush them, who honours their need for routine, and who adds a little lightness and adventure without unsettling the ground beneath them.

In kundali matching

Vrishabha is ruled by Venus and is of Vaishya varna; its vashya group is Chatushpada. In a match, Venus and the lord of the partner's rashi are read for Graha Maitri, the friendship of the two minds; the two varnas and vashya groups are compared in Varna and Vashya; and how far the partner's rashi lies from Vrishabha decides Bhakoot. No rashi makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
