The story in the sky

Rohini's deity is Brahma, the creator, honoured here as Prajapati, the lord of all beings. The story goes that Daksha gave his twenty-seven daughters, the nakshatras, in marriage to the Moon. Of them all, the Moon loved Rohini best, and he lingered with her so long that the others complained to their father. Daksha's displeasure made the Moon wane, and only Shiva's grace let him grow full again, which is why, the tale says, the Moon still waxes and wanes, visiting each wife in turn. Families still say a Rohini child is easy to love and hard to leave: warm, graceful and content where there is beauty and affection.

What the name holds

Rohini means 'the one who rises' or 'the red one', after its glowing reddish star, and its symbol is an ox-cart loaded for market, the picture of a household moving steadily forward. Tradition gives each quarter (pada) of the nakshatra its own syllable for beginning a child's name, and the quarter the Moon stood in at birth chooses it: ओ (o), वा (va), वी (vi) or वू (vu).

Nature

People born with the Moon in Rohini are said to be gentle, attractive and fond of the good things of life. The Moon itself is its ruling planet, and the Moon is traditionally said to be happiest here, which gives these people a soft, pleasing manner and a rich emotional life.

Strengths

They have taste, charm and a creative touch, and many are drawn to music, art, cooking or growing things. They are patient builders: what they start, they nurture slowly into something lasting. People feel at ease with them, and they have a gift for making a home beautiful and welcoming. Their calm makes them good company in both good and hard times.

In family and marriage

Family is at the centre of their life. They are affectionate, attentive spouses and loving parents, and they take real pleasure in comfort, festivals and shared meals. They feel things deeply, so they may need to watch a tendency to become possessive or to cling to comfort when change is needed; a little flexibility keeps their warmth from turning into worry.

The partner who suits them

A partner who is loyal, appreciative and openly affectionate tends to suit them, someone who values home life and returns their care with steady attention. They flourish with a spouse who is calm rather than restless, and who enjoys building a comfortable life step by step. Given that security, they bring beauty, tenderness and contentment into a marriage.

In kundali matching

Rohini is Manushya gana and Antya nadi, and its yoni animal is the serpent. In a match these are set against the partner's nakshatra: a partner who is also Antya nadi brings Nadi dosha; a partner of Rakshasa gana brings Gana dosha; and Yoni compares the two animals. Other features of the two kundalis can cancel a dosha, so no nakshatra makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
