A nakshatra has four quarters, called padas. Part of Krittika lies in Mesha and part in Vrishabha, so a person born in Krittika has Mesha or Vrishabha as their Moon sign depending on the pada; the kundali shows which.

The story in the sky

Krittika is the cluster of six bright stars families still point out on winter nights. The story goes that when Kartikeya was born from Shiva's fire, carried by Agni and cooled in the Ganga, six sisters of these stars found the baby and nursed him. He grew six faces so that he could drink from each of them, and he took his name, Kartikeya, from them. Tradition sees in Krittika people that same fierce, protective care: they will feed and guard whoever is placed in their keeping, and they burn bright for what is right.

What the name holds

Krittika means 'the cutters', from an old word for cutting, and its symbol is a razor or a flame, the bright edge that cuts through what is false. Tradition gives each quarter (pada) of the nakshatra its own syllable for beginning a child's name, and the quarter the Moon stood in at birth chooses it: अ (a), ई (i), उ (u) or ए (e).

Nature

People born with the Moon in Krittika are said to be clear-sighted, frank and full of quiet fire. The Sun, its ruling planet, gives them dignity, self-respect and a natural wish to lead. Krittika begins in Mesha and continues into Vrishabha, so some carry more of Mesha's drive and others more of Vrishabha's steadiness.

Strengths

They are honest to the point of bluntness and cannot bear pretence. They work hard, keep high standards and protect those in their care with real courage. Many are good teachers, cooks and organisers, people who make things right and leave them better than they found them. Their sense of fairness makes them trusted in family disputes.

In family and marriage

At home they are dutiful and generous providers who take their family's welfare personally. They nourish others in practical ways, often through food and care. Their frankness can sound sharp to softer ears, so a little extra gentleness in how they say things keeps the warmth they feel from being missed.

The partner who suits them

A partner who values honesty and does not take offence at plain speaking tends to suit them, ideally someone patient and warm who can soften their edges with affection. They respect a spouse who has principles of their own. Given loyalty and appreciation, they are steadfast, protective partners who keep the family's hearth burning.

In kundali matching

Krittika is Rakshasa gana and Antya nadi, and its yoni animal is the sheep. In a match these are set against the partner's nakshatra: a partner who is also Antya nadi brings Nadi dosha; a partner of Deva or Manushya gana brings Gana dosha, while another Rakshasa does not; and Yoni compares the two animals. Other features of the two kundalis can cancel a dosha, so no nakshatra makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
