The story in the sky

In the old stories the ram is the mount of Agni, the god of fire, who carries every offering up to the gods. The sign's lord is Mars, Mangal, whom the Puranas call the son of Bhumi, the Earth herself, and whom tradition makes the commander among the planets. The Sun is said to be at its strongest in Mesha, which is why the solar year in much of India begins when the Sun enters it, at Baisakhi. A sign that opens the year, carries fire and is led by a warrior: families hear in it a child who likes to go first.

What the name holds

Mesha simply means 'ram' in Sanskrit, and the ram is its symbol: an animal that lowers its head and walks straight at whatever stands in its way. When a family names a child by the Moon, the first sound of the name comes from the pada of the nakshatra the Moon was in at birth. Mesha holds nine padas, the whole of Ashwini and Bharani and the first pada of Krittika, so its sounds are चू चे चो ला ली लू ले लो अ (chu, che, cho, la, li, lu, le, lo, a).

Nature

Mesha is the first rashi of the zodiac, a fire sign of the movable (chara) kind, ruled by Mars and pictured as a ram. Those whose Moon sits here are said to carry the ram's spirit: direct, energetic and eager to begin. They think quickly, speak plainly and prefer action to long deliberation. Their feelings rise fast and settle fast, so a moment's anger rarely turns into a lasting grudge.

Strengths

Courage is the quality most often named. People with a Mesha Moon take initiative, protect the people they love and are not easily discouraged by difficulty. They are honest to the point of bluntness, which makes them easy to trust: what they say is what they mean. Many are natural leaders in a crisis, and their enthusiasm lifts the people around them.
