Varna koota in kundali matching
Varna koota looks at spiritual compatibility: whether the two share a sense of what matters in life, and the respect they will hold for each other. It is the lightest of the eight kootas, worth 1 of the 36 gunas.

Open the Gun Milan appTraditionally each Moon rashi carries one of four varnas, read here as a bent of mind: towards learning and faith, courage and leadership, enterprise and trade, or work and service. Varna gives 1 point or none, and one point of 36 seldom changes the answer, so a 0 here is nothing to worry about on its own.
This is the varna of the Moon's rashi, not of the family: the family's caste plays no part in this koota.
Where the idea comes from
The four varnas are an old picture of society as one body, each part with its own calling: the teacher, the protector, the trader and the worker. Jyotish borrowed the picture for the mind rather than for birth, giving one calling to the three signs of each element - fire, earth, air and water.
Behind the rule is an older picture of the household, in which the husband was its head and led its prayers and rites, and so his varna was asked to be the same as his wife’s or higher, never lower. It is an idea from another age, and it carries a single guna.
The varna of each rashi
| Rashi | Varna |
|---|---|
| Mesha (Aries) | Kshatriya |
| Vrishabha (Taurus) | Vaishya |
| Mithuna (Gemini) | Shudra |
| Karka (Cancer) | Brahmin |
| Simha (Leo) | Kshatriya |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Vaishya |
| Tula (Libra) | Shudra |
| Vrischika (Scorpio) | Brahmin |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Kshatriya |
| Makara (Capricorn) | Vaishya |
| Kumbha (Aquarius) | Shudra |
| Meena (Pisces) | Brahmin |
How the point is given
The rule follows the traditional order of the varnas: Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra. The point is given when the boy's varna is the same as the girl's or comes before it in this order, and not when hers comes first.
What the Gun Milan app shows
Every result has a Varna row with both varnas and the point, added into the total like the other seven kootas. Varna never raises a dosha. If your family gives it more weight than its single point, that is a question for your pandit ji.
