The story in the sky

Dhanu's lord is Jupiter, Brihaspati, the guru of the gods, to whom they turned for counsel whenever they lost their way. The Puranas remember him as patient, learned and endlessly generous with what he knew, which is why the planet is still simply called Guru. The sign itself is pictured as an archer whose lower body is a horse: the speed of the horse joined to the aim of the bowman, his eyes always on a distant mark. A teacher's wisdom and an archer's long aim: families hear in a Dhanu Moon a child who asks big questions and keeps their eyes on the horizon.

What the name holds

Dhanu, from the Sanskrit dhanus, means 'bow': not the archer but the bow itself, a fitting sign of aim, discipline and the patience to draw before letting go. Its symbol is the archer drawing that bow. Dhanu holds all of Mula and Purva Ashadha and the first pada of Uttara Ashadha, so a child named by the Moon here takes a first sound from ये यो भा भी भू धा फा ढा भे (ye, yo, bha, bhi, bhu, dha, pha, ḍha, bhe).

Nature

Dhanu is a fire sign of the dual (dvisvabhava) kind, ruled by Jupiter, the guru among the planets. Its symbol is an archer, often drawn with the body of a horse, aiming his bow at a distant target. Those born with the Moon here are idealistic, cheerful and frank. They love learning, travel and open spaces, and they are drawn to questions of dharma, philosophy and what makes a life worthwhile.

Strengths

Their strengths are optimism, honesty and generosity. People with a Dhanu Moon lift the spirits of everyone around them, speak their mind sincerely and give freely of their time and knowledge. They respect teachers and elders, keep faith in good times and bad, and often become guides and advisers to others. Many do well in teaching, law, religion and work that involves travel. The tendency to watch, traditionally, is speaking too bluntly; a little tact makes their good advice easier to hear.

In family and marriage

At home they bring warmth, humour and a sense of adventure. They value family traditions and religious observance, and they encourage their children's education and independence. In marriage they are sincere, generous and good-natured, and they want a partner who shares their values and their enthusiasm for growth. They need some freedom of movement and thought, and given that trust, they are loyal and faithful companions.

The partner who suits them

A partner who is open-minded, honest and cheerful suits Dhanu best, someone who enjoys learning and is happy to share journeys of both kinds, on the road and in the mind. Respect for their principles, a light hand rather than a tight hold, and a steady home to come back to are what keep a Dhanu marriage happy.

In kundali matching

Dhanu is ruled by Jupiter and is of Kshatriya varna; its vashya group is Dwipada in the first half of the sign and Chatushpada in the second. In a match, Jupiter and the lord of the partner's rashi are read for Graha Maitri, the friendship of the two minds; the two varnas and vashya groups are compared in Varna and Vashya; and how far the partner's rashi lies from Dhanu decides Bhakoot. No rashi makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
