Purva Ashadha's deity is Apas, the divine waters. The Vedic hymn to the waters calls them mothers, who cleanse whatever they touch and bring strength and joy, and its words are still said when water is sprinkled at the start of a puja to make the place pure. Water gives way to every obstacle and still reaches the sea, which is why the old name of this star speaks of a victory that cannot be stopped. Tradition sees that in Purva Ashadha people: confident and persuasive, refreshing to be around, and quietly unwilling to give up on what they believe in.
What the name holds
Purva Ashadha means 'the earlier invincible one', the first of two stars named for victory. Its symbol is a winnowing fan, which separates the grain from the chaff. Tradition gives each quarter (pada) of the nakshatra its own syllable for beginning a child's name, and the quarter the Moon stood in at birth chooses it: भू (bhu), धा (dha), फा (pha) or ढा (ḍha).
Nature
People born with the Moon in Purva Ashadha are said to be confident, optimistic and spirited. Venus, its ruling planet, gives charm, a love of beauty and an affectionate, generous heart, so their strength comes wrapped in warmth.
Strengths
They hold firm convictions and argue for them persuasively, and many have a gift for speaking, teaching, law or any work that needs conviction. They are energetic, independent and hard to discourage, and they tend to bounce back from setbacks with fresh enthusiasm. Their optimism and charm win people over, and they are loyal to those they care for.
In family and marriage
At home they are affectionate, lively and proud of their family. They enjoy comfort, good food and beautiful surroundings, and they like to see everyone happy. Their confidence can sometimes make them insist on being right, so being willing to let a small argument go helps keep the household peaceful and close.
The partner who suits them
A partner who is affectionate, open-minded and secure in themselves tends to suit them, someone who enjoys their spirit and is not unsettled by a lively debate. They value loyalty, romance and a spouse who shares their optimism. Married to someone like that, they are warm, generous and devoted, and bring energy and hope to the home.
In kundali matching
Purva Ashadha is Manushya gana and Madhya nadi, and its yoni animal is the monkey. In a match these are set against the partner's nakshatra: a partner who is also Madhya nadi brings Nadi dosha; a partner of Rakshasa gana brings Gana dosha; and Yoni compares the two animals. Other features of the two kundalis can cancel a dosha, so no nakshatra makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
