Mula is the root, and its deity is Nirriti, the Vedic goddess of decay and dissolution, who presides over the breaking down of what has run its course, as a farmer pulls up the old stubble so that the field can be sown again. The star is also honoured in a gentler way: in many parts of India, during Navratri, Goddess Saraswati is welcomed into the home on the day the Moon is in Mula, and books and instruments are placed before her. Tradition sees both sides in Mula people: they want to get to the root of things, and they love learning for its own sake.
What the name holds
Mula means 'the root', and its symbol is a bunch of roots tied together, the hidden foundation on which everything that grows above it stands. Tradition gives each quarter (pada) of the nakshatra its own syllable for beginning a child's name, and the quarter the Moon stood in at birth chooses it: ये (ye), यो (yo), भा (bha) or भी (bhi).
Nature
People born with the Moon in Mula are said to be searching, sincere and drawn to the truth beneath the surface. Ketu, its ruling planet, gives a philosophical, unworldly streak and a strong inner life.
Strengths
They are investigators by nature, and many do well in research, medicine, law, philosophy or any work that needs patience and depth. They are honest, direct and not afraid to question what others accept. When they believe in something they give it their whole effort. Their ability to start again from the roots makes them resilient and wise with experience.
In family and marriage
In family life they are sincere and loyal, though they may be reserved about their feelings. They care about doing what is right by their family, and they often become its thoughtful voice on serious matters. Their directness can sometimes sound blunt, so a softer word now and then helps those around them feel the deep care behind it.
The partner who suits them
A partner who is patient, understanding and grounded tends to suit them, someone who respects their search for meaning and gives them space to think. They value honesty and depth over surface charm. With a spouse who offers steady warmth and shared values, they become a loyal, devoted partner whose roots, once planted, hold firm for life.
In kundali matching
Mula is Rakshasa gana and Adi nadi, and its yoni animal is the dog. In a match these are set against the partner's nakshatra: a partner who is also Adi nadi brings Nadi dosha; a partner of Deva or Manushya gana brings Gana dosha, while another Rakshasa does not; and Yoni compares the two animals. Other features of the two kundalis can cancel a dosha, so no nakshatra makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
Mula is one of the six Gand Mool nakshatras, which sit at the three knots (gand) where a rashi and a nakshatra end together. By the common reckoning only the pada at the knot counts - for Mula, its first pada - though some families count the whole nakshatra, so the family pandit decides from the exact birth time. Tradition holds that a birth at the knot can bring difficulties for the child's family, the parents most of all. It belongs to the birth rather than to matching, and does not enter the 36 gunas.
