The story in the sky

Jyeshtha's deity is Indra, the king of the gods. His most famous deed, told in the Rig Veda, was against Vritra, the great serpent of drought who had shut away the rivers. Indra, armed with the thunderbolt, broke Vritra's hold, and the waters ran free again to fill the fields. For that he became the eldest and chief among the gods, the one the others looked to when something had to be faced. Tradition sees Indra's role in Jyeshtha people: capable, protective, mature beyond their years, and the ones who take charge when the family needs someone to.

What the name holds

Jyeshtha means 'the eldest' or 'the senior', and its symbol is a round amulet or earring, a mark of rank and of protection. Tradition gives each quarter (pada) of the nakshatra its own syllable for beginning a child's name, and the quarter the Moon stood in at birth chooses it: नो (no), या (ya), यी (yi) or यू (yu).

Nature

People born with the Moon in Jyeshtha are said to be proud and private, choosy about the friends they keep close, and quick to rise to a challenge. Mercury, its ruling planet, gives them a sharp intellect, resourcefulness and a good head for practical affairs.

Strengths

They have natural leadership and a strong sense of responsibility, and they often become the person the family relies on, like an elder sibling, whatever their age. Many are clever planners, effective managers and quick problem-solvers. They are courageous in defending those who depend on them. Their self-respect and competence earn them a respected place in any circle.

In family and marriage

In the family they are protective and take charge of its welfare, often caring for parents and siblings as well as their own household. They like to be respected and consulted. Their sense of responsibility can make them reserved or controlling under strain, so a little openness and trust in others lets the warmth beneath their strength show.

The partner who suits them

A partner who is respectful, loyal and emotionally warm tends to suit them, someone who appreciates their protectiveness and gives them the regard they value. They do well with a spouse who is secure enough to share decisions and gentle enough to ease their burdens. With such a partner they are devoted, generous providers and fiercely loyal companions.

In kundali matching

Jyeshtha is Rakshasa gana and Adi nadi, and its yoni animal is the deer. In a match these are set against the partner's nakshatra: a partner who is also Adi nadi brings Nadi dosha; a partner of Deva or Manushya gana brings Gana dosha, while another Rakshasa does not; and Yoni compares the two animals. Other features of the two kundalis can cancel a dosha, so no nakshatra makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.

Jyeshtha is one of the six Gand Mool nakshatras, which sit at the three knots (gand) where a rashi and a nakshatra end together. By the common reckoning only the pada at the knot counts - for Jyeshtha, its fourth pada - though some families count the whole nakshatra, so the family pandit decides from the exact birth time. Tradition holds that a birth at the knot can bring difficulties for the child's family, the parents most of all. It belongs to the birth rather than to matching, and does not enter the 36 gunas.
