A nakshatra has four quarters, called padas. Part of Punarvasu lies in Mithuna and part in Karka, so a person born in Punarvasu has Mithuna or Karka as their Moon sign depending on the pada; the kundali shows which.

The story in the sky

Punarvasu belongs to Aditi, the mother of the gods. The story goes that when her sons lost the heavens, she prayed until Vishnu was born to her as Vamana, the small boy who won everything back in three steps. And the Ramayana says that Rama himself was born under Punarvasu, the prince who went away for fourteen years and came home to a city lit with lamps. So this is the star of things returning: of light after dark and of family reunited. Tradition sees in Punarvasu people the same forgiving, hopeful heart that trusts that good things come back.

What the name holds

Punarvasu means 'the good returns again', from punar, again, and vasu, the good or the light. Its symbol is a bow and quiver, the arrow that always finds its way home. Tradition gives each quarter (pada) of the nakshatra its own syllable for beginning a child's name, and the quarter the Moon stood in at birth chooses it: के (ke), को (ko), हा (ha) or ही (hi).

Nature

People born with the Moon in Punarvasu are said to be good-natured, hopeful and easy to live with. Jupiter, its ruling planet, gives wisdom, faith and a love of learning. Punarvasu lies mostly in Mithuna and ends in Karka, so some carry more of Mithuna's lively mind and others more of Karka's tenderness.

Strengths

Their great gift is resilience: after a setback they recover, forgive and begin again without bitterness. They are content with simple things, honest in their dealings and generous to those around them. Many are natural teachers, counsellors or caretakers, and people come to them for comfort and good sense. Their faith steadies the family when others are anxious.

In family and marriage

At home they are warm, nurturing and devoted to their parents and children alike. They like a settled house, simple routines and a family that stays close. Their easy-going nature can sometimes let small matters slide, so a little attention to planning and money keeps their contentment on firm ground.

The partner who suits them

A partner who is kind, honest and family-minded tends to suit them, someone who shares their values and does not need luxury to be happy. They respond to gratitude and gentle companionship rather than grand gestures. With a spouse who values faith, learning and a peaceful home, they make a forgiving, loyal and cheerful partner for life.

In kundali matching

Punarvasu is Deva gana and Adi nadi, and its yoni animal is the cat. In a match these are set against the partner's nakshatra: a partner who is also Adi nadi brings Nadi dosha; a partner of Rakshasa gana brings Gana dosha; and Yoni compares the two animals. Other features of the two kundalis can cancel a dosha, so no nakshatra makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
