The story in the sky

Ashlesha belongs to the Nagas, the serpent people of the old stories, who guard treasures and hidden knowledge beneath the earth. The best-known of them is Vasuki. When the gods and asuras churned the ocean for the nectar of immortality, it was Vasuki who let himself be wound round the mountain as the churning rope, and held on through all the pulling until the nectar rose. Families still honour the Nagas with milk on Nag Panchami. Tradition sees that serpent nature in Ashlesha people: perceptive, private, deeply attached to their own, and with far more endurance than they show.

What the name holds

Ashlesha means 'the embrace' or 'the one who clings close', and its symbol is a coiled serpent, the picture of strength held in reserve and of an embrace that protects. Tradition gives each quarter (pada) of the nakshatra its own syllable for beginning a child's name, and the quarter the Moon stood in at birth chooses it: डी (ḍi), डू (ḍu), डे (ḍe) or डो (ḍo).

Nature

People born with the Moon in Ashlesha are said to be perceptive, clever and private. Mercury, its ruling planet, gives a sharp mind, a way with words and a quick grasp of people and situations.

Strengths

They read people well and are rarely fooled. Many are persuasive speakers, shrewd in business, and skilled in medicine, research, law or any field that needs depth and strategy. They hold on to their goals with great tenacity and can turn a difficult situation around through intelligence rather than force. Their loyalty to those they trust is strong and lasting.

In family and marriage

With family they are intensely attached and protective, and they hold their loved ones close. They are often the careful planners of the household. Because they keep their feelings to themselves, they may need to watch a tendency towards suspicion or holding back; sharing what they think openly helps the people around them feel the closeness they truly offer.

The partner who suits them

A partner who is honest, trustworthy and emotionally open tends to suit them, someone who earns their trust steadily and respects their need for privacy. They value intelligence and loyalty above display. With a spouse who is transparent and reassuring, their guarded nature relaxes into deep devotion, and they become a wise, protective companion for life.

In kundali matching

Ashlesha is Rakshasa gana and Antya nadi, and its yoni animal is the cat. In a match these are set against the partner's nakshatra: a partner who is also Antya nadi brings Nadi dosha; a partner of Deva or Manushya gana brings Gana dosha, while another Rakshasa does not; and Yoni compares the two animals. Other features of the two kundalis can cancel a dosha, so no nakshatra makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.

Ashlesha is one of the six Gand Mool nakshatras, which sit at the three knots (gand) where a rashi and a nakshatra end together. By the common reckoning only the pada at the knot counts - for Ashlesha, its fourth pada - though some families count the whole nakshatra, so the family pandit decides from the exact birth time. Tradition holds that a birth at the knot can bring difficulties for the child's family, the parents most of all. It belongs to the birth rather than to matching, and does not enter the 36 gunas.
