Swati's deity is Vayu, the wind and the breath of life. The best-loved story about this star belongs to the rain. Poets have long said that a raindrop falling while the Moon is in Swati, if it lands in an oyster shell, becomes a pearl, and that the chataka bird waits patiently all year to drink only that rain. The same drop of water, landing in the right place, turns into something precious. Tradition sees that in Swati people: independent and adaptable, carried along like the wind, yet patient for the right moment and the right place to settle and shine.
What the name holds
Swati means 'the independent one' or 'the self-going', and its symbol is a young shoot swaying in the wind, which bends without breaking. Tradition gives each quarter (pada) of the nakshatra its own syllable for beginning a child's name, and the quarter the Moon stood in at birth chooses it: रू (ru), रे (re), रो (ro) or ता (ta).
Nature
People born with the Moon in Swati are said to be soft-spoken, compassionate and careful with what they earn. Rahu, its ruling planet, gives an original, curious mind and a wish to make their own way in the world.
Strengths
They are diplomatic, fair-minded and pleasant to deal with, and they get along with people from every walk of life. Many have a talent for business, trade, travel or any work that calls for flexibility and good relations. They learn by experience and grow steadily stronger. Their sense of balance and their dislike of quarrels make them peacemakers in the family.
In family and marriage
In family life they are gentle and considerate, and they give others space as readily as they ask for it. They value harmony and avoid harsh words. Their need for independence can sometimes make them hesitant to settle a decision or to lean on others, so they do well to share their plans openly with those closest to them.
The partner who suits them
A partner who respects their independence and gives them room to grow tends to suit them, someone balanced, courteous and secure enough not to hold too tightly. They value fairness, good conversation and a peaceful home. Given that room, they become a loyal, adaptable companion who brings calm and fresh air into the household.
In kundali matching
Swati is Deva gana and Antya nadi, and its yoni animal is the buffalo. In a match these are set against the partner's nakshatra: a partner who is also Antya nadi brings Nadi dosha; a partner of Rakshasa gana brings Gana dosha; and Yoni compares the two animals. Other features of the two kundalis can cancel a dosha, so no nakshatra makes a match good or bad on its own. How kundali matching works explains the whole reading.
